Chamomile – Herb Gardening For Beginners

Chamomile

Chamomile is a perfect choice when it comes to herb gardening for beginners. It was the very first herb I planted when we bought our house. I was not successful in that planting. But I have learned my lesson.

I wanted a chamomile lawn. I just loved the idea of walking on a carpet that smelled so sweet. The problem I had was that my soil has way too much clay. Chamomile lawns like sandy soil. It can tolerate poor soil but thrives in sandy condition. I also planted the wrong kid of chamomile. For lawns, look for the non flowering variety “Treneague”, it smells great and grows low.

I solved my problem by planting the right chamomile in between my stepping stones. The soil is sandy, I get the benefits of the scent leaves and it is easier to maintain.

Chamomile – There are different varieties of chamomile. Most plants that are used for tea grow 18 inches tall. (Matricara recutita) German Chamomile has yellow flowers and feathery leaves. This hardy annual has an apple like fragrance.

Uses-  Both the leaves and flower have their uses. You can make a tea of each one. The tea is famous for soothing nerves, a sleep remedy and a hair rinse for blond hair. It can also be used as a repellent for insects. Use it sachets or rub it on your skin to repel gnats.

Soak tea bags and place them on your eyes to relieve puffiness. This soothing tea is also used to relieve upset stomachs.

Do not use this herb if you are allergic to rag weed.

Propagation – by seed directly in the ground in spring or autumn. Sprinkle the seeds and just barely cover them.  You can also split of roots and plant them. Plant them 6 inches apart.

Growing- Chamomile is really very hardy. They love space and a sunny location. Be sure to pick a the variety you want for the use you have in mind. It is easy confuse this plant with other daisies.

Companion plants – Chamomile is called “The Plants Physician”. When you plant it next to sickly plants it helps them heal.

Storage- You can dry chives but it is best to freeze them. Using a clean pair of scissors, just clip the chives into a freezer bag. You can also dry them by clipping them when they are fresh. Store them in air tight containers in a cool dark place.

Enjoy!
